Dream Library. Great Libraries
I always daydream about having a huge room of a library in my future home. Apart from miles of books and built-in shelves to the ceiling and possibly a second floor above the main one, my dream library would include the following and more:
-Large rectangular table or 2
-comfortable chair to sit at the tables
-comfortable lounge chairs or sofas
-atlas/dictionary stands
-at least one computer and desk set up to be able to access scanned documents or articles, and of course have access to my catalogue
-book carts (to take stuff off the shelves and wheel it to where I am sitting next to a computer or table)
-steps
-some sort of hidden door/room to be accessed from one of the bookshelves
here are a few things I love:
here are a few pictures of great libraries:

Some home libraries can be seen here: http://yourhomelibrary.wordpress.com/
We have 2 of these Norrebo shelves from IKEA that we use to store part of our library collection. Although they are 2 sided, which means we can put books on both sides, there's not nearly enough room for our books on them. We have a lot of larger art and architecture books which take up the whole space from one side to the back, and probably too many atlases. We have to use our old Billy bookcases (3 of them) as well as another large shelf in my room to fit all of our books and related stuff. University texts take up far too much room.
Norrebo Shelving Unit $399
We have some of those magazine holders that fit into Norrebo, also. It all works fairly well so far. The Norrebo shelves are nice as room-dividers.
The Software I use to catalogue my books, movies and games is called Delicious Library (http://www.delicious-monster.com/).
(some of) What I love about it:
- you can scan in your books, games and movies using the barcode using your isight.
-it looks like a shelf with all your stuff on it and it is really easy to find things
-you can use it to keep track of things you have lent to people by giving them a due date and it'll alert you to when things are due! fun!
-it is easy to put together a list of works cited/bibliography because you can select the books you are using for your paper or whatever and make a separate "shelf" for them and all the info you need is listed.
check their website for more info.

Post a CommentToo funny, my boyfriend was just telling me today about his dream library. I showed him the pictures you posted and he was in love with the first one. I liked the one with the cozy fireplace too.
It's so fun to plan this kind of thing but sadly for us it won't be a reality any time soon! Oh well
Wow these are some pretty great home libraries...I've also always imagined to have a dream library like one of these but for now I'll start focusing on finding a place on my own...so the library will have to wait
But I hope in the future it won't be just a dream! Thanks for
posting tdarnji...
I have always dreamed of having a similar library myself! I love the pictures you shared....just beautiful! I deal with a lot of loose documents as well as books so I've always dreamed of scanning them in and having a network set-up where I can have a big LCD television by my work tables where I can scroll through and zoom in on all documents and books I have in my library. A girl can dream, right? LOL.
Love it!!
Thanks for the info about the software!!!
Style Before Comfort!
Oh my!!! That would be my dream library too. Reminds me of Henry Higgins' in My Fair Lady. I've always wanted a library with shelves that have a sliding ladder. When I was a kid I was lucky enough to have a teacher live across the street. Her daughter had a library in her closet and all the neighborhood kids would "check out" our favorites. Unfortunately most of my library is gone. My basement flooded last summer and I lost probably 90% of my book collection. Some rare, some sentimental, some unread but all cherished possessions. I cried and cried, I could cry now thinking of it, but property was all that was lost. I don't live in a flood area and this was just a fluke misfortune compared to all the flooding elsewhere in the country. So I still dream on of my dream library.
Love the IKEA shelving. And we were JUST window shopping this weekend looking for ideas along this line.
i agree with marci IKEA has some great stuff.
I love your Library idea...and my version of a library will be a little smaller i'd like it to be more cosy....and i just love the smell of leatherbound books and wood! I love the library steps and the lamp in your list!
