I always daydream about having a huge room of a library in my future home. Apart from miles of books and built-in shelves to the ceiling and possibly a second floor above the main one, my dream library would include the following and more:

-Large rectangular table or 2
-comfortable chair to sit at the tables
-comfortable lounge chairs or sofas
-atlas/dictionary stands
-at least one computer and desk set up to be able to access scanned documents or articles, and of course have access to my catalogue
-book carts (to take stuff off the shelves and wheel it to where I am sitting next to a computer or table)
-steps
-some sort of hidden door/room to be accessed from one of the bookshelves
here are a few things I love:

here are a few pictures of great libraries:

Some home libraries can be seen here: http://yourhomelibrary.wordpress.com/

We have 2 of these Norrebo shelves from IKEA that we use to store part of our library collection. Although they are 2 sided, which means we can put books on both sides, there's not nearly enough room for our books on them. We have a lot of larger art and architecture books which take up the whole space from one side to the back, and probably too many atlases. We have to use our old Billy bookcases (3 of them) as well as another large shelf in my room to fit all of our books and related stuff. University texts take up far too much room. We have some of those magazine holders that fit into Norrebo, also. It all works fairly well so far. The Norrebo shelves are nice as room-dividers.

The Software I use to catalogue my books, movies and games is called Delicious Library (http://www.delicious-monster.com/).

(some of) What I love about it:

- you can scan in your books, games and movies using the barcode using your isight.
-it looks like a shelf with all your stuff on it and it is really easy to find things
-you can use it to keep track of things you have lent to people by giving them a due date and it'll alert you to when things are due! fun!
-it is easy to put together a list of works cited/bibliography because you can select the books you are using for your paper or whatever and make a separate "shelf" for them and all the info you need is listed.
